Each window is divided by an etched band of clouds into heaven and earth. The left window in the left image is a resurrection theme. Christ is shown rising and shining on the lamb and the lilies on the earth below, tradition symbols of the promise of resurrection. The artist added a comet to the starry heavens as a comtempary symbol of rebirth, only to later discover that traditionally the comet is a symbol of chaos in the heavens. These two designs represent the nativity scene with the Star of Bethlehem on the right. Christ is represented by the candlelight (the Light of the World) and by the Chi Rho, or PX symbol, a Greek name for Jesus. The moon, usually a feminine symbol, represents the Mother Mary. Notice in the color pictures how the background colors are shaded from the dark to light in each window, giving drama and continuity to the group. |
